I’m quickly approaching the one year anniversary of my “hiatus” from Second Life and virtual worlds in general. I never really intended for it to go on so long. I thought that I’d be back in the swing of things after a few months. I guess I was more burnt out than I thought I was…. I was very angry and bitter at the time that I left in my usual path of scorched earth and prims. Its hard to even say why. There were so many reasons most of which are now irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Second Life was a big part of my real and virtual life for many years with both extremely positive and extremely negative connotations. Needless to say, that while, I’ve turned the corner after being burnt out on Second Life, that I’m having a bit of trouble resuming any interest in SL or logging in with any frequency. A lot has changed in Second Life over the past year or so. I’m actually more interested in Open Sim these days than in Second Life proper given the myriad of Linden Lab’s asshattery.

All Deadly Nightshade customer service concerns will be handled by FlipperPA Peregrine during my extended absence from Second Life. I apologize for not doing this sooner and for making light of the situation. Mea culpa!

Flipper will handle failed inventory transactions, refunds and other miscellaneous issues. Because he is not a fashion designer, no modifications will be made to existing items.

If you had a customer service issue previously ignored by yours truly please contact FlipperPA Peregrine and give a detail explanation of the problem and inventory items concerned. Since he is not familiar with my entire collection, please give specific item names i.e. (Deadly NIghtshade) Crimson Contact Lenses as opposed to Red contact lenses. This will make it much easier for him to ameliorate the situation.

Please note: all items in the Deadly Nightshade corset sets are sold separately. Yes, the corset is pictured on the three separate skirts available, but that is primarily because the pictures would have looked stupid without them. Also, the corsets were a reissue from an original design made in 2005.

All items should be Mod/Copy No Transfer. Not all are, especially if they are older. If this is a major concern for you please contact us.

We will not provide customer service for free items.

Please also realize that FlipperPA Peregrine doesn’t log in as much as he used to, but please be patient as it can take up to a week for issues to be resolved.

Thanks,

Jennyfur

Sometimes it pays to be snarky and mildly offending… at least I don’t have to change my blog title in light of “Fake World” makers Linden Lab’s new mandate reported by Tateru Nino of Massively regarding usuage of Second Life names and logos in conjunction with third party products and websites.

Flip/Tim and I have been entrepreneurs in Second Life for the better part of the past four years, in which the use of “Second Life”, “Linden”, “SL” etc. as part of a business name or url has been widely accepted and endorsed by Linden Lab. This is evident in the numerous Second Life related websites that have cropped up over this time.

I believe the process for naming the Second Life Community Convention and for using the SL name and logo within our own only involved an email expressing permission, a direction to download said logos from the website and eventually this was put into writing in mid-2007 as part of the formal contract between the convention and Linden Lab.

Beyond the SLCC, Flip/Tim has worked extensively on SLBoutique (now OnRez), SLTrivia and SLPTO. The later two I suppose fall into the trouble zone and will need some appropriate attention whether it is filing for use of the url or changing the name entirely. I know that we are not alone in our contempt for this new decision.

Granted some of the language is vague with no indication of how strict or lax the enforcement will be. The change seems sudden and on the heals of the recent announcement that Philip Rosedale will step down as Linden Lab’s CEO, one can easily wager to guess what may be next coming down the virtual pipelines.

For now, I view this action as a slap in the face to all of the enterprising individuals who helped to build Second Life into what it is today. Linden Lab developed the product and platform, but without the countless enterprising residents engaged in forging the vision for virtual worlds far and wide since late 2002… Second Life never have grown to its current size and popularity.

I have some free time today. I figured that I would update my blog with some random happenings and thoughts.

As it should come as no surprise to anyone that knows me, I am still on a long term hiatus from Second Life. I’ve logged in a couple times over the past month or so. I usually get frustrated by the poor performance issues and promptly log back out without a second thought. It makes me sad to feel such apathy and contempt for something I once loved so much. I thought at first that I was just sick of the drama that stormed through our virtual lives year after year, but I think it runs deeper than that now. I had always been a big supporter of Linden Lab and Second Life. It just got to the point where I could no longer make excuses for a product that barely works on a good day. I just hope that I haven’t become disenfranchised to the point of not ever coming back and/or completely removing my business interests from Second Life.

While on the subject of Second Life, I’d like to extend a belated congratulations to Daniel Terdiman on the pending release of The Entepreneur’s Guide to Second Life. Upon speaking at the Virtuals Worlds Conference in NYC back in March, he asked me to contribute some knowledge and insight on fashion design and content creation in Second Life. On a side note, whilst Google searching my avatar, I see that while I am wholly un-present in Second Life and most Second Life related forums and blogs, that a certain bag lady blogger still has me in her cross hairs questioning how I could possibly contribute anything on content creation since I’ve like never rezzed a prim. For anyone interested, I became a content creator around May 2004 and regularly released new items up until this past year. My main store is in Indigo and I have owned and managed several other malls and boutique locations around Second Life since August 2004.

I am still playing World of Warcraft because tried and true it works and critical functions don’t break after updates. The “lag” when noticeable in capitol cities is almost laughable compared to the walking through molasses lag at any given time in Second Life. It has been a fun experience since I have never been into online games like this before. I am always amazed by the intuitiveness of the User Interface and just how smooth and beautiful the world is at any given time. Sure, it does not have streamed content like Second Life, but I’d sacrifice streamed content in order to never see Missing Image again.

And in other news, I began managing a friends band last month, Trouble Everyday, whom as you may remember performed a show in Second Life back in June hosted by Phreak Radio. I have been enjoying it immensely and life again. I think after nearly four years of being involved in virtual world stuff I just needed to do something real and tangible again, eventhough we are focusing on interaction with various new media outlets. I’ll be writing more about my adventures on this blog soon enough. I just need to transition it from being 100% Second Life related to being a mix of new media, music and personal stuff.

I’ve come to realize that I do not spend as much time in world anymore. I get a fair share of offline instant messages regarding various customer service issues, most of which, unfortunately, I never get around to answering anymore. Over the next couple of months, I hope to implement some sort of customer service policy for better addressing the needs of my customers. I apologize for any inconveniences. I barely have time to design new clothing let alone customer service.

For the meantime, here are a few pointers:

1. If you purchased an item and cannot find it in your inventory, first try relogging and doing a thorough inventory search before contacting me. Due to the instability of Second Life inventory passes are failing more and more. If you never received an item, please send me a detailed offline IM telling me the full name of the item. I will send you replacement items. Please do not send me a message that says “Help I didn’t receive an item” and leave it at that. Also, if you do not hear back from me in a couple days please send a follow-up offline instant message to remind me. Since, my offline messages get capped I often do not see them when I log in and forget to take care of them.

2. I no longer do customer support for SL Boutique. Yes, I know that I am listed as a contact person on the note card given by the ATM machines, which is sadly out of date. Otherwise, I do not know why your avatar is not linking or where your deposits have gone or why you have not received an item. However, if you purchased an item of mine on SL Boutique and have not received it, please inform me of the purchase and the item name. I will send you a replacement item. For all general SL Boutique customer support questions please contact Commerce Leader in world. In general, I ignore IMs for general SL Boutique support.

3. All of my prim based clothing items are modifiable. Given the diversity of body sizes and shapes in Second Life not all prim wear fits perfectly. I cannot at this time make modifications for you. I am working on writing a short “How to manual” on prim wear modifications.

4. I cannot at this time custom edit clothing pieces. All items are purchases as is.

We’re still renovating the store. The basic structure is done, its just down to the details and texturing.

I decided to revamp some of my pre-flexi prim best sellers this weekend. I started with the series of corsets that I originally designed back in the Fall of 2005. The original corsets remain unchanges, but I added three flexiprim skirt designs for each corset. Most of the flexiprim skirts can be interchangeable with other corsets in the series though it may require a little prim tweaking depending on the cut of the corset as some are longer than others.

The revamped sets so far are Allegory, Rhapsodie, Interlude, Steelrose, Vienna and Gaudete. The rest of the corsets from the series will be redesigned and revamped shortly. All sets are available first at Deadly Nightshade Design Studio in Indigo
